Old Yardleians RFC: Club News

WALKING AWAY FOR THE LAST TIME

Thu, 25 Jan 2018 12:00

Richard and Eve after a life time of Old Yardleians Rugby have decided to emigrate to the Land of Rugby and Song. I suppose if they are definitely moving then , at least, they are going to the right place.

To me, They seemed like part of the club furniture, a bit like Blox, Bert or Steve Painter. He was happy talking rugby and supping a beer. Eve seemed  like a Mother Figure, cheerful, popular and a very good cook.

My reporter from the Channel Islands passed a few words to me about the life and times of Walking  Stick. If Dave's memory is correct, he tells us that Richard and Himself met as they started at Yardley Grammar School in 1953. They both had little interest in academic study, much preferring Rugby. Along with Terry Hartwell, they continued to play the great game on leaving school and the rest is history.

This coming Friday, the club is inviting you to enjoy a drink a bite to eat and as much social intercourse as you can manage. I think it will be a good evening.

OUT ON THE PITCH
As I enjoy the wet and cold weather, I drove down to the Tilehouse Arena and saw some good rugby from our 2nds and 3rds. I think the visiting sides were as follows.

Old Yards 2nds  v   Aldridge 1sts , A 7 -0 win for Old Yards  and  Old Yards 3rds defeated Dixonians 1sts 24-0. Things are looking up.

CHARITY QUIZ
Friday Evening saw a very well supported quiz evening at the club. 14 teams took part and the winners were my Badminton team, Saint Alpheges. Congratulations. Our two Charities shared the proceeds which were over £400. It was good to see Jim Samuel for his first quiz and I would like to thank Bill and Gina and Shannon and Pat for opening the club and running the bar, Rick and Sue Thorne for helping me to deliver the quiz and last but not least, Anne, Ellie and Nick for their help.
