Old Yardleians RFC: Club News

WHAT A PLEASANT SURPRISE.

Tue, 01 Mar 2016 12:00

On a day when the affluent members of the club opted for Twickenham or HQ as it is sometimes called, the rest of us made our way down to Tilehouse Lane to see how much damage limitation we could provide in two fairly difficult matches.

That well known local Master of Mathematics and one-time Edwardian centre, Mr Ogan, was impressed by the fact that we were able to produce both second and third/Vets teams. In his words," this is what rugby should be about." I am not entirely sure what he meant but it sounded good at the time.

Town sides
Whether it is correct or  not, many rugby folk consider that town sides are usually stronger than the Old Boys type of clubs and with the Seconds playing Walsall 2nds and the Vandals/Thirds playing Kenilworth Pirates/Thirds, there was a feeling that we might not win. But as my article indicates we were about to receive "A pleasant surprise".

The Walsall teams are usually determined and that was how they played but a vastly improved Yards put together a very impressive performance to win by 28-8

The Vandals, dead and buried with a 17 point deficit came back strongly to win by 38-36.

Two excellent wins and credit not only to the players but also to the team management for producing teams on the day.
