Match Report - U14s v Market Bosworth R.F.C.

Sat, 28 Apr 2007 08:44

Old Yardleians  0  Market Bosworth  12

Market Bosworth were a side that we had not played before and as such their strength was unknown.  Looking at them warming up before the match they looked a well organised team.  With a few players short Old Yards had to switch the players around to ensure that there was an even strength through the positions.

It was clear from the start that Market Bosworth were going to be formidable opponents showing their strength and speed of passing.  Fortunately for Old Yards the opposition handling was letting their good play down.  After some resolute defending by Old Yards, Market  Bosworth took the lead after 13 minutes.  The away side were awarded a penalty and kicked to touch.  From the throw they took the ball and keeping the ball tight went over the line for the try.  With a good kick they increased the lead to 7-0.

The remainder of the half was very tight with some good tackling by both sides.  There were a couple of concerns for Old Yards as first Andrew and then Stuart went down with head injuries after tackles as their heads hit the hard ground.  Old Yards had played well in the first half and in particular Tom Scott.

Half Time - Old Yardleians  0   Market Bosworth  7

The second half saw Old Yards stepping up their game and coming close on a couple of occasions.  There were a couple of times when, if the ball had been passed rather than players running on with it, scores could have been made.  Old Yards were dominating the second half right to the end but in the final minute the away side scored again.  Market Bosworth were awarded a 5m penalty and decided to try and power their way over but the Old Yards defence stood firm and managed to push the opposition player into touch.  Having won the throw it looked as though Old Yards had prevented the away side from scoring but a mistake from the knock back from the throw allowed a Market Bosworth player to break through the line and dive on the loose ball to score.

Old Yards can count themselves very unlucky to lose the match after a very determined second half.  On another day the scores could have easily have been reversed.
