The Ones moved another step closer towards back to back promotions on Saturday when they comprehensively outplayed current league leaders Pinley with another bonus point 31-12 win at Tilehouse Lane. Given the game's importance a full officiating team were on hand and it seemed to benefit Yards with a penalty count of 17-4 against Pinley in the first half. With the Yards eight providing plenty of possession, the Yards backs turned in another electric performance that their Coventry based opponents simply couldn't live with, resulting in a four try haul. The Forwards were also rewarded for some excellent scrummaging when Pinley were forced to collapse a scrum with the line begging, referee John Kelly awarding a penalty try. With the game well won and cruising at 31-0, Old Yards were a little guilty of taking their foot off the gas allowing Pinley to score two late tries, one of which was converted.
Along with the penalty try Yards' other four tries were scored by Greater Birmingham scrum half Tom Grocott, winger Carl Bucknall and a brace from impressive centre Tom Waters with fly half Jake White adding three conversions. The win puts Yards second in the table a point behind Pinley but with a game in hand and four points ahead of third placed Old Wheatleyans; this Saturday Yards travel to second bottom side Shipston on Stour.
The Seconds were in Worcester & Hereford Merit League 1 action and travelled over to undefeated Stourbridge Lions 2nds and were well beaten 53-7. The Club's elderly gentlemen, the Vandals, cemented their top spot in Worcester & Hereford Merit League 3 with a dogged performance in Somme like conditions against Stourport 2nds, tries were scored by Gary Robinson, Peter Butler & Steve Roberts, with Dave Rollins adding a conversion in a 17-7 win. The Hornets came up just short losing 25-15 against Kings Norton 2nds in a friendly over at Hopwood.
