Two people destined to make a
big difference at the club joined us from Old Moseleians, Steve Chinn and
Brian Woody Wood.
In 1978 negotiations with
three different breweries commenced with a view to obtaining some financial
assistance and release from our contract with Scottish and Newcastle.
Mitchells and Butlers made the best offer. The new range of beers proved
successful in attracting custom. To further increase finances it was
suggested that we introduce a gaming machine and juke box. The latter was not
considered desirable but the hire of a gaming machine proved profitable
raising 275 in the first two months.
Two further Easter tours in
1978 and 1979 were to Torquay. In a game against Honiton one of our players,
having been kicked on top of the head, was forced to leave the field bleeding
profusely. Clutching a pad of bloodstained bandage to the wound he was taken
by a friendly local to the village. A knock on the door produced a man and
young lady dressed in squash kit. Protesting vehemently that it was making
them late for their game, they took him inside and rapidly stitched up the
wound. Some stitches with thread, some with his own hair. Finished off with
an application of a handful of white powder he was ejected and taken back to
Honitons clubroom bar. When he pointed out the limitations in the bedside
manner of their GP he was told that he was not a Doctor but the local Vet. He
ordered a pint thinking how fortunate he was not to have broken a leg and been
put down..
